Audiopoli's R&D activity is the association's own audio constructions and experiments: one-off special projects and prototypes that are not meant to be built by the members. The biggest of these are Kinopoli's own subwoofer and main speakers. The speaker-building projects open to all members can be found on the Past projects page.
Timeline
- Early 2000s: Kinopoli's first main speakers, the "Cows", were built.
- 2008: the TEH Subi, Kinopoli's subwoofer of over 1,500 litres, was built in April over a single weekend.
- 2009–2010: design and prototypes of the Anni bass stands. The stands were shown at the hi-fi show in 2010, but the project stopped when the driver was discontinued.
- 2011–2012: the NuCau, Kinopoli's new main speakers, was designed and built. The speakers were presented at HifiExpo in November 2012.
- 2015: a new centre speaker built on the NuCau principle was made for Kinopoli when the theatre's sound system was upgraded to Dolby Atmos.
- 2018–2019: ReFi (Refrigerated Fidelity), a demonstration speaker built out of an old refrigerator, and its upgrade.
- 2020: the Anni prototypes, experiments towards a bigger successor to the Aniversario.
- 2021–2022: PA speakers, built together with AaltoDJ: two 12-inch tops with horn tweeters and two 15-inch subwoofers, all in paraflex enclosures. The speakers are passive and run from a rack of their own, where a DSP handles the crossovers and every driver has its own amplifier channel.
- 2023: in Kinopoli's renovation the NuCau's crossover was redesigned from scratch and the bass system was replaced with Subi 4.0.
